Prince Charles paid a quiet visit to Shobdon Church this week. "It was exciting to have a royal visit, I have never met Prince Charles before, and it was a privilege to meet him", said Rector, the Rev'd Julie Read.

St John the Evangelist Church, Shobdon has a surprising interior, and one that draws tourists and enthusiasts of architecture from far and wide. The outside of the church is deceptive, with a medieval tower and typical appearance. However once you get inside you get a big surprise -a unique Rococo style. Many compare the appearance of the inside to an "iced wedding cake", with its white, highly ornate pews with pale blue paintwork. This style of architecture dates from the 18th century and is found in only a handful of churches across the country.

Although Prince Charles arrived a little later than expected, he was still keen to have a long look at this wonderful church, on what was his first visit here. "He asked lots of questions and signed the visitors' book," she added .

Prince Charles had been drawn to the church building because of plans to establish a Shobdon Church Heritage Trust. This is a body that will seek to preserve this unique church, and the unusual architecture that it holds. The Shobdon Church Preservation Trust has received a right royal start. It will be launched in May 2004, and we hope that many people in the Marches will joint the trust to raise money for this wonderful building in which Christians gather to worship regularly Sunday by Sunday
